Like all parents, you want to offer your toddler the best possible environment to wake up and develop all their skills. Here are 8 activities that could help.
Of course, there is no question of overloading his schedule by registering him for 10 different activities! He needs calm, time to do nothing but dream and rest. But one or two activities will allow him to broaden his discoveries to other horizons than the house, his nanny, the nursery or the school. Besides equipping your home with educational toys, there are also other ideas of activities parents should consider to organize and join for their toddlers to maximize the preschool education in the USA and in other regions in the World. You choose.
1) Visual arts (from the nursery)
Motor skills: ++ Concentration: ++
What it will bring him: a lot of sensory pleasure! What could be more exciting than smearing a leaf with paint or kneading clay? Art creation is often a great way for a child to express slightly cumbersome emotions. On the cognitive level, he also acquires basic knowledge of shapes, colors, volumes. And of course, he fine-tunes his fine motor skills by learning to handle pencils and brushes.
2) The circus (from 4-5 years old)
Motor skills: +++ Concentration: ++
What it will bring him: this circus activity allows your child to work on his gross motor skills and the coordination of his gestures, to locate his body in space, to gain self-confidence by discovering his physical capacities, overcome some apprehensions and push your limits. But what is the fundamental difference with the toddler gym? The marquee, the circus objects are supports that trigger his imagination.
3) Musical awakening (from 3 years old)
Motor skills: ++ Concentration: +++
What it will bring him: your child will build everything he will need if he intends to practice a musical instrument later: mastery of the gesture (plucking a string, blowing in a flute, etc.), the ability to ‘Listening, attention and patience. Psychological research has also shown that children with regular music develop not only their emotions but also their intellectual and cognitive brains. And then singing with your little one is surely within your reach. !
Where to go? The list of all conservatories and associations offering musical awakening workshops for toddlers is available on the Mediatheque of the Cité de la Musique website: www.mediatheque.cite-musique.fr.
And at home: there are CDs very well made to allow toddlers to familiarize themselves with the sounds of the instruments. You can always get the latest library in the Montessori library near you.
4) Gardening (from 3 years old)
Motor skills: ++
What it will bring him: a garden is always a soothing place, far from the noise of the city, where your child can come into contact with nature. In such a workshop, a toddler realizes that what he eats comes from the earth. That a garden is alive, that we must respect the plants that are there. And as he has the authorization to touch the ground, to put his hands in it: he understands that contrary to what he could believe, the earth is not dirty!
5) Baby swimmers (up to 4 years old)
Motor skills: ++
What it will bring him: in water, a toddler enjoys great motor possibilities, richer in any case than in a terrestrial setting, especially if he does not yet know how to walk or is a beginner walker. Worn by armbands or supported under the armpits by his parents, he can move freely, experimenting with different positions of his body in space. He is getting to know his body better, how he can use it. He tames the aquatic element, reassured by the presence of his parents.
6) Gym for toddlers (3 to 5 years old)
Motor skills: +++
What it will bring him: from 4 years old, children attend the activity without mom or dad. Throwing, catching, jumping, climbing, crossing, rolling on itself: as many motor actions that the small child will acquire and improve in a gymnastics workshop. In a way, he pre-cables for the sports he will practice later! But this activity goes beyond the motor aspect alone. It allows you to work on social skills (accepting that the other is on my team, submitting to the rules of the game, listening to instructions, learning to lose).
7) Theatrical awakening (from 3-4 years old)
Motor skills: ++
What it will bring him: between 3 and 5 years old, children are not made to work on diction or memory, which would represent too much effort. We rather start from their imagination: for example, they draw a dragon and then play the character by inventing a story. They learn concentration (because they have to repeat a lot to improve), responsibility (we are not in the playground, we do not do anything, we play for an audience) and finally solidarity ( we are part of a small troop and we work together to build a nice show).
Where to go? At the town hall to find out about associations involved in theatrical awakening.
8) Introduction to English and other languages (from 4 years old)
Motor skills: +
What it will bring them: with children aged 4-5, it is not an “English course” but simply playing, tinkering, cooking for one hour a week with an English-speaking animator who speaks exclusively in English. Thanks to the gestures and the context, children very quickly understand small simple instructions, polite formulas, small words of everyday vocabulary, appropriate them and are able to repeat them. At this age, it’s the very emotional bond they create with the worker that makes them want to speak English and other languages.
